Finally worked out why locos kept stalling on the Peco 3-way point. The two outer closure rails (circled) are electrically isolated, relying totally on contact from the point blade for current. This may not be a problem with Seep point motors, but as I remove the springs (necessary with Cobalts), the contact just isn't reliable. Hence the stalls.
Apart from the hassle of lifting the point and refitting it, the fix - permanently wiring the closure and stock rails (second pic) - is straightforward and 100% reliable. Just wondering why the point isn't wired up like this already - it's already halfway to being a unifrog.
Anyway, now to tackle the same point on my other layout
