Gasworks

Writer's picture: JULES ATTARDJULES ATTARD

The Macclesfield Gasworks dominated the skyline to the south of Hibel Road, so even though it will only be on the backdrop of my layout, it was important that it resembled the real one. However, try as I might, I couldn't get close: my artistic skills are not up to much, certainly not able to create perspective, and colourising a b/w photo didn't look right.

Then I had a brainwave. One of the few things I was any good at in work was Powerpoint. So I created 2D elevations as a series of geometric shapes on vertical planes, imported a brick texture from Scale Model Scenery, and then combined the front and side views using Powerpoint's 3D perspective tools. A few tweaks of the final jpeg, and job done.
