Beech Lane tunnel WAS high enough for them. The problem was turning them in Manchester London Road as the turntable wasn't big enough, necessitating a run around a triangle.
I've heard reports from trainspotters of the time that they did, and I have run one on my layout, but I know someone is bound to challenge me if I run it at a show. So I had to find evidence.
